- Community Healthcore (CHC) has a grant from the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities to train self-advocates to be trainers and to facilitate a certain number of trainings each year. At these trainings, the self-advocate trainers train their peers on how they can speak up for what they want in life and how to work for the life that they want.
- CHC has contracted with the Arc of Gregg County and the Arc of Harrison County to help carry out this project. The Arcs assists CHC in training the Self-Advocate Trainers, in coordinating the trainings and in collecting needed information about the peers that attend the trainings.
- Trainings consist of three three-hour-sessions, which typical are scheduled during one week (e.g. Monday, Wednesday, Friday). It is usually easier for the training team to do this during the day, but evening trainings have occurred.
- Trainings sometimes occur in places further from CHC's primary administrative office in Gregg County. CHC and the Arcs rely on other organizations and Host Organizations, to help to facilitate training.
- Money is available to cover most aspects of the training including paying for refreshments, the space, and the time for an attendant to help someone at the training or the time and mileage for someone to transport people to and from the training. So, the Host Organization does not incur a financial burden from assisting with training. CHC can pay a person $8.00 per hour to be an attendant or to transport and 40.5¢ per mile for transportation.
